Eggs do not immediately call to mind grand, sweeping declarations. These sturdy breakfast staples are seriously underused in English idioms (“last one there is a rotten egg” and “suck an egg”— vintage— are the only two that come to mind). Spain, however, knows better than to underestimate the power of the egg to spice up a sentence. This may also have to do with the fact that in Spanish, “huevos” is slang for “balls.” Essentially, it’s a slightly more vulgar way of saying “te quiero un montón” (I love you a ton). So if you’re trying to be cute on a first date, probably say something else.
