rose competition 2017
Catalonians sure know how to welcome the Spring season! On May 12th – 14th, the The 17th Barcelona International New Roses Competition will take place at the Parc de Cervantes.

Every year since 2001, the city of Barcelona has come together to celebrate the annual New Roses Competition. The weekend event is specifically scheduled for the roses blooming season, typically around the beginning of May. It is held at the rose gardens of Parc de Cervantes, which occupy 4 hectares of space and currently hold over 10,000 rose bushes with 2,000 different varieties of roses. The international contest, which attracts contestants from all over the world, was originally created to promote the dissemination and presentation of rose gardens.

The winning rose is given the first place prize called ‘Barcelona’, as well as a place of honor in the rose garden at Parc de Cervantes, right next past competition winners. Winning roses receive international recognition for their unique qualities and cross-breeding. Since these roses are first-time creations by plant breeders, they are non-replicable and not sold in the market.

Another one of the seven available prizes involves the Public Rose category, which allows the general public to participate in a popular vote. Everyone visiting the Parc de Cervantes Rose Garden can vote for their favorite rose to win the 2017 Public Rose. All you have to do is write down the rose’s identifying number on a leaflet handed out at the competition, and then submit that leaflet to the voting panel. Voting is open on Saturday from 10am – 8pm, and on Sunday from 10am – 12pm.

This 3-day event not only features the main rose competition, but also includes concerts, workshops, gastronomy, and other activities suitable for all ages. The contest is organized by the Barcelona City Council and sponsored by different companies and organizations, making admission free for the public.
