Barcelona is a massive city. The famous historical centre is only a fraction of the cities vast expanse. So, unless you plan on investing in a car, you will probably need to hop on the Barcelona Metro may times during your stay! The Metro in Barcelona is extremely accessible and easy for anyone to understand. Even the process of purchasing tickets is easy, quick and self explanatory. No matter how long you are staying in the city, there is a metro card that will serve your needs. As you’ll see in the photos below, you will know exactly which services you’re able to use with each ticket, from the symbols on the card. Besides the metro, the Barcelona Transit System consists of: bus (TMB), local train (FGC), tram (TRAM) and regional train in Barcelona (Rodalies de Catalunya). Short Term Metro Cards

bcnHola BCN Card – This is the perfect metro card for tourists who are just passing through and want freedom to use the metro whenever they want. The Hola BCN card allows you to chose between 2-5 days of unlimited subway travel and includes other transport systems like the Montjuïc funicular, bus (TMB), local train (FGC), tram (TRAM) and regional train in Barcelona (Rodalies de Catalunya). You can also travel to and from the airport with this card. There is no registration necessary, you can buy online or at any ticket machine and the Barcelona Metro stations. 

 t10T-10 – This ticket gives you 10 rides on the Barcelona Transport system. As you enter the metro the ticket will get stamped in the the machine and after ten rides the machine will no longer accept it! The card is great for groups, so you don’t have to worry about keeping track of everyones tickets. There are some limitations, of course. This card is not valid for all metro zones, only individual zones. If you’d like to travel within Zone 2, your Zone 1 ticket would be invalid and you would have to buy a ticket for zone 2. Also, this card is not valid for airport transport. You can buy tickets online or at any metro station in the city!

Long Term Metro Cards

tmesT-Mes – If you are studying or working in the city and need to plan your budget on a monthly basis, the T-Mes is for you! Firstly, the ticket lasts for 30 consecutive days from the moment you first use it. So if you need to use the transport system daily you will certainly make use of it. Secondly, you can purchase your ticket based on how many zones you travel through. You can purchase a zone 1 card, a zone 2 all the way up to a complete zone 6 card. This ticket is also valid for trips to the airport! Prices rise depending on how many zones are included, of course. You can buy tickets online as well as at any metro station in the city!

triT-Trimester – If you don’t want to worry about keeping up with your metro card validity dates, then save some time and invest in the T-Trimester card. This card operates the exact same way as the T-Mes card above, only for a period of 90 days (roughly 3 months). You will have unlimited number of rides, access to airport lines and you are able to purchase the tickets based on how many zones you’d like to have access to. Again, like the T-Mes ticket you have access to the airport with this card. As with all the others, you can buy tickets at the metro stops themselves, or online by visiting their website!

t-jovenT-Joven – The most common card used by students in Barcelona is the T-Joven. Because anyone under the age of 25 years can save up to 50€ on a metro ticket which is valid for 90 days. Just like the T-Mes and the T-Trimester, you will have unlimited rides for these 90 days, including to and from the airport. Which means, this card could almost cover your entire semester of study in Barcelona. Of course, you will need to carry your ID with you at all times to prove your age, just in case they stop to check your ticket. You can buy these tickets online or at any metro station!
